Traveller Discrimination

A warning for Hospitality

A hotel lost a case in the Workplace Relations Commission for refusing a wedding reception of a Traveller.  The case came under the Equal Status Acts 2000-2018.

Initial enquires for booking the hotel was done by email and the hotel was receptive to the enquiry, however when the hotel staff became aware the booking was for a Traveller, they adopted a dismissive attitude towards the woman, stopped answering her queries and resulting in the booking not being made.

This ruling can apply to any venue where Travellers seek to book for weddings, holy communions, confirmations and funerals and any discrimination displayed by venues can be subject to the WRC and awarding compensation.
